Pigeon Polyomavirus (PiAPV) testing

Pigeon Polyomavirus (PiAPV)

Pathogen overview

A multi-organ viral pathogen of concern, most harmful in squabs and young pigeons, linked to immunosuppression and secondary infection.

Transmission

Spread by the respiratory and digestive routes and by direct contact, and also through feathers, droppings and contaminated environments; the risk of spread is higher in young pigeons and in densely housed lofts.

Main impact

Causes systemic infection and immunosuppression, leading to stunted growth, wasting and multi-organ impairment in young pigeons; secondary bacterial or fungal infection worsens the disease and raises mortality.

Why testing matters

Early identification of polyomavirus carriage and infection status, differentiation from other immunosuppressive pathogens such as circovirus, and guidance on isolation and husbandry management to reduce losses during the young-bird period.

Common symptoms

  • ◆ Lethargy and reduced appetite
  • ◆ Ruffled feathers, stunted growth
  • ◆ Wasting, diarrhoea
  • ◆ Secondary infection, increased mortality

Differential diagnosis

Must be differentiated from immunosuppressive pathogens such as pigeon circovirus; polyomavirus is characterised by multi-organ involvement and systemic infection in young pigeons, and PCR is required for confirmation.

Incubation period

Incubation is not fixed; it mainly affects young pigeons and can cause acute death and immunosuppression.

Diagnostic methods

Collect tissue and cloacal swabs for qPCR detection of viral nucleic acid for confirmation, interpreted together with the high mortality seen in young pigeons.

Management and treatment

There is no specific antiviral drug; management focuses on biosecurity, isolation and culling, improved husbandry and prevention of secondary infection.

Prevention

Strengthen loft hygiene and disinfection, control stocking density, isolate affected birds and carry out immune monitoring.
