Pigeon Rotavirus
A leading cause of diarrhoea and gut dysfunction in young pigeons, affecting growth and development during the rearing period.
Spread by the faecal-oral route; the virus is relatively resistant in the environment and spreads readily among rearing groups through contaminated feed, drinking water and equipment.
Causes watery diarrhoea, dehydration and wasting in young pigeons, impairing intestinal nutrient absorption and leading to stunted growth, reduced immunity and higher rearing-period mortality.
Identifies the viral cause of diarrhoea in young pigeons and differentiates it from Salmonella, adenovirus and other agents, guiding fluid therapy, gut support and improvements in husbandry.
Must be differentiated from other causes of diarrhoea in young pigeons such as Salmonella and adenovirus; rotavirus mainly affects young pigeons and causes watery diarrhoea and dehydration.
Incubation period 1–2 days; spread mainly by the faecal-oral route, with young pigeons susceptible.
Collect faeces for qPCR detection of rotavirus nucleic acid for confirmation, interpreted together with the watery diarrhoea.
Treatment focuses on fluid therapy, maintaining electrolyte balance and controlling secondary infection; there is no specific antiviral drug, and veterinary guidance is required.
Keep drinking water and feed hygienic, remove droppings promptly and strengthen care of young pigeons.
